KERALA STATE FILM AWARDS - 2002


 



The film award for the 2002 was announced amidst much controversy. The last one-year was one of the demeaning years of Malayalam cinema. However, a few managed to make the best of a bad tune, with some minimal success rate in the box office. To top the story even worst there was bad dispute among theater owners and distributors as well.

 


Navya Nair bagged the best actress role for her film “Nandanam”, and Oduvil Unnikrishnan “ for Adoor Gopalakrishnans film “Nizhalkoothu. Navya had given her best ever performance in the movie ”Nandanam” .The story line has the touch of fantasy, an element, that was always visible in Padmarajan’s movies. The story depicts the prince charming walking into her life to save her from all the misery. Navya, who deserves all the credit, bestowed on her, since she beautifully portrays the damsel in distress. The movie provides a clean entertainment for the masses. This classic fantasy movie “Nandanam” picked up four awards. The best Lyrics for Girish Puthancherry for the sing “ Gopike…”the best Music composer “Ravindran” for the song “Ganam…” and for obvious award, the best singer female “Chitra” for the song “karimukil varna”. The coveted awards for the best actor were given to “Oduvil” for his performance in Adoor Gopalakrishnan ‘s movie, “Nishal koothu”. Though Adoor’s movie “Nishalkoothu” bagged seven awards, the movie was not considered for the awards for the, best movie, direction and story, by the special request, by Adoor himself.

The Best Movie award was given to “Bhavam” by Satheesh Menon, which bagged another two awards as well. Jyothir Mayi “ for her performance, as the second best actress, and the best debut in direction, Satheesh Menon.

The Best Director and Best Story was not announced as the jury did not find any movies that are worth considering. The Second Best movie was for “Sthithi” by Sharath, who refused to accept the award as his version of thought had been, “how could there be a, best movie with out a best director and best story?? The Second Best actor award was given to Jgathey Sreekumar, for his performers in the movies, “Meeshmadhavan” and “Nishal koothu”. The jury considered, Master Vishnu, for his performance in the movie, “punarjenny” for the Best Child Artist. The jury, who had given a special award for his unmatched performance in the movie “kunjikkoonan”, also, did not omit Dilip, this year. The movie “Nammal” By Kamal was considered as the Best Movie, for its viewer ship count and box office hits. Mangada Ravi Varma and Sunny Joseph shared the best cinematographers awards, based on the pictuersation that was suited for the present scenario. The Best singer-Male was for Madhu Bala Krishnan.

The jury panel was the headed by K G George, and the rest of the members consist of Akbar kakkattil, Jude Attipetty, K G Jay an, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, M S Vishwanathan, G RajMohan, Ramesh Kumar (Member Secretary), they have completed the assessment and decisions by 8th April. The panel to decide the story of the movie is different; D. Vineyachandran is the panel head, Mavelikkara Ramachandran, Akshitha are the rest of the members.

The rest of the awards were given, T A Razak for Best Story Narrator, Isaac Thomas Kottukapally for the Best Baground Music, in the Movie “Bhavam”. Pradeep Paliyath was the Best Producer. Best Dubbing Artist, as always was given to BagyaLakshmy. Best Make Up for Pattanam Rashid.

Many movies impress us less with time. Yet there are some movies which stays in our minds as time goes by .The movie award is a justification of the performances given by the artists, technicians and many more who worked behind and in front of the camera as well. Some leave an unmatched mark in our mind.
