.Film Review - Nandanam - A formula ridden fare with stale visuals and cliches

Story and Direction: Renjith
Cast: Navya Nair,Prithviraj, Revathi, Siddiq,Subair,Kaviyoor
Ponnamma, N F Varghese and Jagathi Sreekumar

The hotshot scenarist Renjith's latest offering turns out to be a tale of same old stereotypes. In fact, it appears to be a combination of several successful formula stories put together.Renjith seeks to grow beyond his own formula by rehashing plots from films like Nakhakshathangal, Ennu Swantham Janakikkuttikku, Sallapam and Yatra. While these films had a finely crafted script and an engrossing plot, Nandanam is lacklustre and tasteless because of the much repeated storyline.Like an average consumer who does't mind replications, the audience in the state goes in for such films. That is why, Nandanam is running to packed houses drawing huge crowds.

Renjith has nothing new to offer. He does not dare to be different. It needs a lot of courage to tread the road not taken. He fails to add innovative touches to the cliche ridden situations that are abundant in the plot.

A cute, simple and lovable village belle dressed in skin tight frock considers Lord Krishna as someone who is close to her heart and shares her innermost feelings with him standing infront of the
garlanded idol.(Yatra, Kanmashi and a host of other films made in this mould) A grand old lady who belongs to an uppercast family pampers her and comes to her rescue while she is in distress (Nakhakshathangal)The protagonist is an outspoken maid servant who is bold enough to deal with any situation (Sallapam).Disguised himself as a brother or a friend, Lord Krishna appears before her
in order to resolve the love related crisis.(Remember, the heavy dose of fantasy in MT's Ennu Swantham Janakikkuttikku in which the Yakshi befriends Janakikkutti and helps her reslove the crisis
and vanishes away) From the very outset, the twists and turns of the story move on predictable lines.

Balamani (Navya Nair) a maid servant works in Unniyamma's (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) ancestral home which is situated near Guruvayoor temple. She never gets a chance to visit the temple as she is always busy with the work.Unniyamma's grandson Manu (Prithviraj) arrives from Bangalore to spend some days with his grand mother before leaving for America to pursue higher studies.Eventually, he falls in love with Balamani. The story takes a serious turn when Manu's mother Thankam decides to get him married at the earliest. Succumbing to the pressure, Manu decides to marry the girl who is the daughter of his mother's friend Venu Menon (Subair) .The marriage does not takes place as she elopes with her lover before the wedding.Lord Krishna, disguised as a friend or brother next door comes to rescue the damsel in distress. The fantasy that engulfs the protagonist forms the crux of the story.

Navya Nair has essayed the role of Balamani with elan. Prithviraj come out with a commendable performance. Songs in the film are hummable.
